Furnaces

Fuel oil is generally considered a less desirable option because of the requirement for a storage tank and higher maintenance costs. Propane is used almost exclusively in rural areas where natural gas is unavailable.

A furnace’s effectiveness is determined by its Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, which was developed by the Department of Energy to provide consumers with a simple way to compare current furnace models. The rating system assigns numerical values based on the percentage of fuel that is converted into heat energy during the burn process. For example, an 80 AFUE rated furnace exhausts 20 percent of the fuel it uses through the venting system in the form of waste gas.

Heat Pump

However, a heat pump incorporates a reversing valve, which allows the refrigerant to flow in either direction. This technology lets the user change the unit into an air conditioner or heating appliance depending on the thermostat mode.

Heat pumps are especially effective in climates with mild winter weather. In areas without natural gas, a heat pump can be an effective alternative if the outdoor temperature is not especially severe. In municipalities with low rates for electricity, heat pumps can be very economical to operate.
